When you are searching for a job today, social media can be either a big help or major hindrance in the process. One of the most useful of these social media networks for job seekers is LinkedIn. However, if you want to get the most from this tool, you will need your profile to stand out from the millions of others. Here are five (simple) ways you can do just that!
- Include a (Professional) Photo – If your profile does not have a photo, recruiters will likely find it easy to ignore. However, not just any snapshot will do. A professional photo assures that your profile stands out from the crowd.
- Take Advantage of Your Headline – Your professional headline should convey where you are as well as where you want to be. Finding the perfect balance is hard, but it is well worth the effort to spend some time on crafting a perfect headline.
- Fill Your Skills – The LinkedIn profile format offers a section where you can include your skills—from the biggest to the smallest. Make sure you utilize this profile section and use it to its fullest. Do not exaggerate, but make sure you include all of your applicable skills.
- Make Connections – If you want to be noticed, the best thing to do is to put your profile in front of more people. Making connections is key. However, do not add people wildly—this is not productive either. Spend some time making connections in your industry and with those you have worked with in previous jobs. Who knows, you may gain some endorsements or recommendations too!
- Check and Double Check – You want your profile to be error-free. Spend some time on proofreading and editing. This can prevent you from making an embarrassing error that makes your profile appear less than professional.
The most important thing you can do to make LinkedIn work for you is to keep it up to date. Do not just create a profile and forget about it—check up on it regularly to make sure your skills and information are up to date. After all, once you follow the tips above, you will be well on your way to making LinkedIn an important part of your job search process.
