Interview Tips for Introverts

As an introvert, the typical job interview is rife with situations that you could probably live without. From the “tell me about yourself” to the handshake goodbye, the entire experience can be overwhelming for introverts. While you may never get to the point that you look forward an interview, but perhaps you can make it through your next one without too much stress and worry.

Research – You can’t control what happens at the interview, but you can be prepared. Research the company and consider chatting with current employees if that is possible. If you know what to expect, you are less likely to “freeze” and feel uncomfortable during the interview.
Work Up to Small Talk – One of the most difficult parts of the interview is the “small talk”. Before you head to the interview, stop by and chat with a close friend or family member to put yourself in a chatting mode. You will be prepared for the small talk that is sure to follow.
Bring Notes – Sometimes you can work through your stress if you have something to look at and work with. Having notes to refer to and look at will make you feel more confident and give you something physical to touch during the interview. This will help you immensely.
Know the Environment – You are likely to feel more comfortable with the interview if you are comfortable with your environment. If possible, know where you are going and even see it or view it ahead of time. Practice driving to the location ahead of time and make sure you are on time.
Prepare Questions – One of the most uncomfortable parts of the interview for introverts will occur if there is a lag in the discussion. Have a few questions ready so you can do your part to keep the conversation flowing naturally—who knows, the potential employer may never realize you are an introvert!

Just remember, millions of other people also identify as introverted, so you are not the only one. Chances are your interviewer or someone close to him or her is introverted as well. You do not look as awkward as you feel. Just smile, push through the “pain” and remind yourself it will be over soon!
